Urban Education
The College of Education has a Center for Urban Education working to improve the quality of education in urban schools. Schools in urban areas too often teach children and young adults who come to school less well prepared than their middle class peers. Teachers in these schools often lack the experience, background, and skills necessary to help those students achieve. Through our Center for Urban Education, the faculty recruits and prepares educational leaders, teachers, and administrators, to work in those schools. We build collaborative partnerships with the community to better serve those schools. And we support new and experienced urban educators toward improving their teaching and learning in urban settings. To broaden the impact of our work, we conduct research on best practices in urban schools that is published locally and nationally. Our goal is that all of these activities lead to improved academic and social success for students in urban settings.
